In the 3280 (46%) patients in whom ΔnSOFA was available, sepsis (RR 2.42 (1.62-3.60)), brain function deterioration (RR 6.97 (3.71-13.08)), and the two together (RR 10.24 (5.93-17.67)) were associated with an increased risk of in-hospital death, whereas improvement in brain function was not.Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that causes absence or dysfunction of a protein named transmembrane conductance regulatory protein (CFTR) that works as an anion channel. As a result, the secretions of the organs where CFTR is expressed are very viscous, so their functionality is altered. The main cause of morbidity is due to the involvement of the respiratory system as a result of recurrent respiratory infections by different pathogens. In recent decades, survival has been increasing, rising by around age 50. This is due to the monitoring of patients in multidisciplinary units, early diagnosis with neonatal screening, and advances in treatments. In this chapter, we will approach the different therapies used in CF for the treatment of symptoms, obstruction, inflammation, and infection. Moreover, we will discuss specific and personalized treatments to correct the defective gene and repair the altered protein CFTR. The obstacle for personalized CF treatment is to predict the drug response of patients due to genetic complexity and heterogeneity of uncommon mutations.In this study investigated the association between health practices and food stockpiling for disasters in predicted areas with a high risk of food shortage due to the Nankai Trough earthquake. A survey was conducted during 18-20 December 2019 using a self-administered web-based questionnaire. In total, 1200 individuals registered with an online survey company participated in the study. The association between health practices and food stockpiling status was analyzed (n = 998). 59.1% of participants had a poor Breslow's seven health practice scores (BHPS), 32.9% had a moderate score, and 8.0% had a good score. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that higher BHPS had a significantly higher prevalence of food stockpiling. Additionally, the interrupted group had the highest percentage of participants with low BHPS. Lower BHPS was significantly associated with interrupted stockpiled in the adjusted models. Among the seven health practices, the odds ratio of the "eating breakfast" practice was high. There was a significant positive association between higher health practice scores and food stockpiling for disasters in areas with a high risk of food shortage due to the predicted earthquake. Particularly, it was clarified that individuals who had fewer good health practices were associated with ending up interrupting food stockpiling.In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the exceptional situation that has been experienced on a global scale since 2020, it is essential to assess the impact of COVID-19 in several areas and domains. Therefore, this research seeks to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on work-related quality of life (WRQoL) in a Portuguese-speaking sample, through the lens of sexual orientation. One thousand, five hundred and seventy-seven individuals participated in this study, of which 1396 (88.5%) self-identified as heterosexual, 95 (6.0%) as gay or lesbian, and 87 (5.5%) as bisexual. Participants responded to the "Work-Related Quality of Life" scale, the "Fear of COVID-19" scale, and the "Negative Impact of COVID-19" scale. Bisexuals scored higher on "Fear of COVID-19" and "Negative Impact of COVID-19" than heterosexual, and gay, or lesbian participants. Differences between sexual orientations for all dimensions of WRQoL were found heterosexual participants scored higher on general well-being, home-work interface, career satisfaction, working conditions, and lower on stress at work, compared to bisexual, and gay, or lesbian participants. Gay or lesbian participants scored lower than heterosexual and bisexual participants on career satisfaction and working conditions. Sexual orientation, the fear of COVID-19, and the negative impact of COVID-19 were significant predictors of overall WRQoL (explaining 13% of variance). Moderation analysis also showed that sexual orientation is a significant moderator of the association between the fear of COVID-19, the negative impact of COVID-19, and WRQoL. LGB people (especially bisexuals) suffer more severe impacts of COVID-19 and have lower WRQoL than heterosexual people. Inevitably, this has consequences in terms of mental health and overall quality of life for sexual minorities, thus reinforcing the need to adopt inclusive policies in organizations and companies to improve their WRQoL.Nanoparticles based on chitosan modified with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) were synthetized by nanoprecipitation (EGCG-g-chitosan-P). Chitosan was modified by free-radical-induced grafting, which was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Furthermore, the morphology, particle size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential of the nanoparticles were investigated. The grafting degree of EGCG, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, antibacterial and antioxidant activities of EGCG-g-chitosan-P were evaluated and compared with those of pure EGCG and chitosan nanoparticles (Chitosan-P). FTIR results confirmed the modification of the chitosan with EGCG. The EGCG-g-chitosan-P showed spherical shapes and smoother surfaces than those of Chitosan-P. EGCG content of the grafted chitosan nanoparticles was 330 μg/g. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of EGCG-g-chitosan-P (15.6 μg/mL) was lower than Chitosan-P (31.2 μg/mL) and EGCG (500 μg/mL) against Pseudomonas fluorescens (p less then 0.05). Additionally, EGCG-g-chitosan-P and Chitosan-P presented higher Staphylococcus aureus growth inhibition (100%) than EGCG at the lowest concentration tested.
